A method in quantitative analysis for identifying halogens, phosphorus, and sulfur in organic compounds. The compound is heated with concentrated nitric acid, which oxidizes the organic matter and leaves the element in a form in which it can be detected by normal qualitative analysis. The method is named for the German chemist Georg Ludwig Carius (1829–75).
